Initial Thoughts on a Suspension Bridge

    By on May 22, 2006 - Modified November 23, 2011

I have become enamored with the idea of building a suspension bridge. I am not exactly sure why, and I also need to finish my toothpick bridge. However, I have begun thinking about how I would go about it.

A suspension bridge would be the most difficult challenge so far for me. I am thinking as far as the actual construction. I have begun researching the design principles behind suspension bridges, and they are pretty neat. I have decided to build one that has a center span of about 2 feet. I need to figure out how to anchor the ends.

I want this suspension bridge to be able to hold 50 pounds without breaking. I haven’t decided what material to use for the cables yet, though I am leaning towards fishing line. I will be posting more about this as I progress.

On a side note, I renewed my business license today.

i was thinking, those joinery in that bridge does not look good. all u did was glue the egde of the wood to the bottom beams. I think you should build that with the middle beams cut to fit inside the. I’m building a bridge in school for engineering class. it’s made out of 1/4 x 1/4 inch balsa wood. 18.5inch-19.5inch long. what was ur results for this bridge design?

Matt, Lap Joints, which are what I used in this bridge, are super solid. Check my Bridge Joints page for more details.
