Today I’ve changed the commenting system to DISQUS and switched away from the default wordpress system. I am excited because now it will be easier for you to comment and use your Facebook, Twitter, or OpenID account. You will also be able to be notified when someone responds to your comment, which is a very nice feature.

All the old comments imported beautifully into this new system, so nothing was lost.

Please comment, because your knowledge and questions help make this website better.

Version 5.0.0 has been released. However, I cut out some of the new stuff. I will add that later. The major new section is the Bridge Photo Gallery. You can click on all the photos, and some lead to a page with more information about that bridge. All will show you are much larger picture, so you can really see the details. Of course, the new design is implanted. I picked today to upload everything, because Saturday is usually not a high-traffic day.

You have probably noticed some changes on the website. Those are the new version, 4.5.2. What may not have noticed, is that only the homepage was ever 4.5.1. I didn’t have time to change the other pages, and now it is updated yet again. What exactly are the changes?

1. New position and style of the top navigation menu. This came about after I was reading about website usability. Let me know if you like it.

2. Border around the right menu. I actually had a cool border for it in the previous version, but it only worked in IE. Now it is just a simple black border. But I think it makes it look just a little bit sharper and professional.

3. The Bottom navigation menu style was changed to match the top one.

4. Of course, this blog is new.

5. Modified the 3rd Coolest Guy On The Planet link, and added one about this blog on the homepage. Boy do I really like BirdBlog.

6. Subtle changes to the css code. Was able to delete some excess code after the mods I did.

ToDo List:
If you think I am ever done with this website, think again. There are so many things I want to do with it, pages to add, etc. I don’t know if I will get around to them all, but I will try. Of course, if you start bugging me about things I will get to them quicker.
- I have in the works an idea to really test whether or not Balsa is better than Basswood. But it would be a complicated setup, and time consuming process.
- I am working on re-building Popsicle Bridge #2.
- I want to build a modified Popsicle Bridge #1 that is at least 3 times as strong.
- I recently found some Bamboo sticks in my junk drawer. I would like to turn these into a cool bridge sometime.
- Someday I want to build a toothpick bridge. Maybe a bunch of them.

If you have a cool idea, let me know.

The annual summer itch to update my website has struck again. This update is mostly a frontend, visual update. The website should look much nicer and cleaner now. A bonus of this is that it should be easier to tell where things are.

The changes include adding a round edged background to the main headings. The sidebar also now has a background color with round edges. The main background color has been changed. The color of the “Submit Photos” link has been changed to red. This hopefully will attract more visitors to click on it.

I have updated to the latest version of WordPress. If you notice any bugs around the site please feel free to share them. I will be spending the next several days finishing the upgrade. Most of the site upgraded automatically, but there are some things I will have to do manually.

There are several new features with the new version of WordPress. Most of these features are for me through the admin panel, but you will notice some new things also. Now you have the ability to reply to a certain comment through comment paging.

I have built many different models of popsicle bridges. You can check them out one my popsicle bridge category page.

Popsicle bridges provide a unique challenge because of the limited length of the popsicle sticks. This hurts the inherent strength especially in tension. Ideally, a member of the bridge in tension would be one long continuous piece. This obviously can’t happen with a popsicle stick bridge. The way to overcome this is to glue several popsicle sticks together trying your best to create strong connections between the sticks.Popsicle sticks are fairly strong, but did you know that not all popsicle sticks are equal? You have to be careful which popsicle sticks you choose to use on your bridge.
